Stanley Chernak says this man came to Russia as an infant, with father Haim? Battalen, from Toledo, Spain, where the family had a business. According to Louis Battalen (Lev), his uncle. He might have meant hundreds of years ago, but tells a story of the family leaving Spain with several other people,when he was an infant. They went to Warsaw and from there Lev went to Voronezh and "married a Russian woman." That would have put the exit from Spain in the early 18th or late 17th century. Stanley says "There were always Jews in Spain." Uncorroborated. Possibly eight other children in addition to those listed. Names of Lev's children, and his father's and and back, came from Fannie Battalen Schulman, Lev's granddaughter, told to Louise Goldstein in the 1970's. 21 APR 2013
